Greetings from The Sunny South, north of the James River, west of Williamsburg, and east of Richmond, Virginia! I have traded under the name of James River Technical Communications since 2004. Prior, I was either an employee of one company or another or an independent contractor associated with other companies. I primarily provide these services for my clients:
- System documents (requirements analyses, design specifications, pre-builts, as-builts, and test plans)
- User documents (administrator and user guides, quick-start guides, handbooks, programming guides)
- Marketing communication (brochures, fliers, press releases)
- Web sites and Web content
- Other business communications, such as résumés
Skills
After I completed my career in the US Navy, my most marketable skills include systems analysis and writing. I developed, over the years, an ability to gauge and understand audiences as I prepared and presented information to my peers and subordinates, signals intelligence technicians, as well as officers and government leaders. Almost without realizing it, I became a…technical writer and editor.
Subcontracting
I have been, as most of us are, very fortunate by my associations with many highly skilled professionals in my field, technical communication. When I need to bring in someone on a project, I know who to contact. I trust them, and they trust me.
Summary
I am a contractor; I understand the needs of small businesses. Their need for good, effective communication products is no different from large corporations, but their resources are much more limited. Since I have that experience and enjoy a solid reputation for delivering on time at reasonable rates, people trust me to work with them. Small and medium sized firms especially appreciate that I offer professional services for a fixed rate based on their requirements, not my ego.
