Documentation Issues What? You’ve experienced problems with your documentation projects? Well, haven’t we all? Here are some problems, or issues, we've discovered from our work with some clients.
Know Your Audience Documents are not born in a vacuum, although they may be stillborn. Why? Too often, the author assumes he or she knows the audience and understands their information needs. In fact, more often than not, managers, engineers, and even marketing specialists conduct little research to identify what the audience needs and expects.
Working With You James River Technical Communications works for you, particularly if yours is a small- or medium-sized business and you need any kind of writing service.
Project Management When you contract with James River Technical Communications to work on a long-term documentation or Web development project, you’ll want to know how and what we’re doing. We provide a means by which you can accomplish this and, if you wish, to collaborate online with us on your project.
Why Remote Work Works How do you profit—increase your profit—by “letting” your contractor work from a remote site? Personnel or staff expenses eat the lion’s share of any company’s budget. Yet, how can you manage, or control, a sub-contractor’s work if he or she isn’t sitting in a cubicle at your site?
Invoicing You Fixed-fee pricing is best for you and for James River Technical Communications. We strongly suggest a fixed fee for most projects, but we do perform work on projects on a Time & Expenses—hourly—basis. Fixed-fee works best on longer term projects that are more complex; time & expenses, or hourly billing, works best when you have a document, blog, or brochure (for example) that you want us to edit and publish.

Convert Your Web Site

Hits

Convert Your SiteA commerical Web site includes much information that rarely changes, but singificant data can change daily. For instance, pricing and promotions fluctuate as often as needed in today’s marketplace. If yours is a small or medium-sized business, can you afford to keep a full-time webmaster on staff to handle the changes you need?

Managed content is the key to success these days. Large companies use content management systems, or content portals, to handle their presence on the World-Wide Web. Even though your business is far smaller than that of an IBM, you still need to be able to respond quickly and efficiently to your market and customers.

Successful Web sites are not born and maintained on the whims of their owners. Good sites are driven by the needs of their potential customers—Web visitors.

You create products or sell services you design to meet the needs of your market. Use the same approach to your Web site: the customer’s, or visitor’s, needs and expectations come first.

Need to change your online advertising or marketing copy now? Wouldn’t it be easier and more efficient to be able to login to your site and simply add the information right away? Of course it would.

James River Technical Communications specializes in creating Web sites based on proven open-source content management systems, such as Joomla!, Drupal, and WordPress.

If yours is a static HTML site, we can convert it to a managed content site within three weeks (or less, depending on the complexity of your site).

We will:

  • Establish the design requirements and specifications from interviews with you and your staff
  • Create the underlying database and implement the content management system
  • Establish the information architecture needed to efficiently catalog and present your Web content
  • Ensure that the new site conforms with current best practices for search engine optimization
  • Ensure that your site complies with at least the basic tenets of Web accessibility and user design practices
  • Move your site from our development site to your domain quickly and efficiently with minimum down-time

Your cost will be very reasonable compared with others. We will offer you a contract based on our interviews with you and your staff to establish your operational requirements for your site. You will not be charged by the hour for our work; your price will not change, unless you add more to your project after we begin work.
